Restarting

It comes down to one line. Nothing else seems to matter anymore. Just the one line, what it conveys, the structure, whether the words sound right and if not, how can they be made right? That's what redrafting's like for me and since my project is nearly ending, application season is upon me, so redrafting it must be now.

A lot's happened between my last post and now: for starters, I've started working at Express Tribune, joining the team of editors. It's a push-pull relationship with the reporters and I'm not used to having to prove my editorial skills, since I've been involved in that side for so long, this is what I do best. Having people question my authority and talents is a challenge I'm going to have to meet head-on. But perhaps, it shouldn't come as a surprise. This is Pakistan, after all, where bureaucracy rules the roost. It isn't a criticism as much as an acknowledgment of fact. Things will be (are) different at TMS. But it's still an inimitable experience; the nitpicks is the Editor-in-Chief in me, long used to cutting through the bullshit and solving a problem.

It's interesting being in a position where my professors can satisfactorily comment on my writing and teaching skills. But God must not be underestimate in my arrival here, in a place where I'm not just allowed to pursue what I love, but that it's being encouraged. It mayn't seem like a blessing to voluntarily be working in the publishing industry, but it's been hard won independence, and I'll revel in it. At least for a little while, until the next project comes along which won't take long.

Changes are afoot. Of the good variety. I can't wait to explore the future.

Meanwhile, new TV favorite: British drama Downton Abbey. If you haven't seen it yet, now's the time to start catching up.
